The big advantage of a bag store is that it is suitable for up to 4 floors of potatoes. We usually assume a stack height per floor of about 3 meters. This means that the maximum total stacking height in the system is about 12 meters. That is a really efficient use of floor space! The disadvantage is that the store can only be loaded manually. A lot of labor is needed to fill all floors with bags of potatoes. Therefore the system is only suitable in regions where labor is relatively cheap.
The bag store functions as a multi-floor room ventilation system, typically employed in storage facilities. A spacious ventilation shaft is constructed along one wall of the store. Fans installed within the shaft propel air upwards, circulating it through each floor. Upon reaching the top floor, the air is dispersed over the stored products. It then continues to flow downward through all floors, ultimately re-entering the ventilation shaft at the lower levels.
Bag stores are commonly deployed in dry and hot climates, where they are equipped with cooling systems to regulate storage temperatures. Humidification is essential to prevent dehydration, while CO2 extraction equipment ensures efficient air quality management. Interestingly, hatches also offer added benefits in these climates. During a significant portion of the storage season, nighttime temperatures are cool enough to utilize outside air for ventilation, thereby reducing the operating costs of cooling equipment.
